Marginal Plant Question

I just made a pond in my yard and have had it up and running for about a week now. I bought some marginal plants like aurea, some type of begonia, and creeping jenny, I put the aurea and begonia submerged under the water about 1 inch above the soil level, well it looks like they have bit the dust. My creeping jenny is newer so before I kill it I want to find out how exactly are you supposed to treat marginal plants... do you leave them in their pots with dirt, take them out of the dirt, submerge them slightly below the water, or keep the soil level above the water? Any advice/tips anyone can give on keeping pond plants would be appreciated.

I know it's a bit late but I'd thought I'd answer this. I'm growing Creeping Jenny in my outdoor containers now. I would plant it under the water 1"-4" deep. They'll grow if you plant them deeper, but IME they're happier closer to the water surface.

Marginals are funny some like to be under water and some just like to be damp.
Look up the plants you have for what they need.
Good luck
