Anyone have/had skin cancer/Dysplastic Nevi?

I can only give the advice of GET IT CHECKED BY A SPECIALIST!

My friend (43 years young) died 2 months ago from cancer--leaving behind 3 kids, a wife and MANY friends and family members who miss him greatly. He was diagnosed with melanoma two years ago. Around Thanksgiving of 2010 he started having dizziness and headaches--6 months later he was dead.

Be sure to be safe, rather than sorry.

I've got a derm appt schedule in about 2 weeks.

anxiously awaiting my appointment. I am def more diligent about putting sunscreen on. Wading through the crappy products that offer minimal protection sucks though. Sometimes the most expensive have the lowest ratings. Also finding one that is oil free but still effective is tricky. If I am putting it on every day I don't want to be a grease ball.

I am 30 and this really does make me think.... I cannot tell you the last time that I used sunscreen... I am in the sun allot too. Fishing, hiking, ect... I also can't tell you the last time that I actually had sun burn. I normally just tan and get pretty dark(odd being Irish and German). I have noticed 'freckles" I think, that I haven't noticed before. I'm not really sure because I don't really examine myself for things like that. Maybe I should though...

Being you've hit that big 3-0, its time to start going in for a regular physical anyways. A simple skin cancer screening from the Doc is a good idea for everyone, particularly since you should be in there anyway.

Watch the youtube link I posted above. I'm not really one for those types of videos, but this one worked on me. Pretty damn sad to let something so simple end the fun.

I'm going to start having a series of moles removed. They did 4 yesterday. Somewhere around 30 or so more that are on the chopping block.

I had a teacher in 5th grade who had skin cancer for years and it went into remission when I was in 11th grade. I recommend aloe. Good luck!

I too was a XC runner. Started in college too, till I had a few consecutive knee injuries. Didn't put sunscreen on once when I ran. And I ran a LOT. Would retire a pair of asics every month or two.

I might have went through a bottle in 3 summers of lifeguarding, too.

What a shame, too. Considering how on edge it has me now about something I have very little control over, it is pretty stupid to "be cool" and not put anything on.

Awesome 5K time, my best was 18:56, I probably could have gotten that down to 16's or 17's if I had continued the sport through college, but studies took a priority. Plus 5am workouts followed by evening workouts didn't seem like fun.

On the mole side of things, I had a couple removed from my back by my family pratice doctor. They turned out to be benign, but I was nervous till the results came back. My main complaint about the family practice doing it was the scars that were left, they were pretty big and I think it was partly due to the stitches coming out early and perhaps lack of expertise. I have a few other moles I should probably have checked out. If I remember next time I go to the Doc I'll have to ask.

I'm a 3rd year med student, not that it means anything at all yet. But in any case, it's good to see that you got a derm appointment.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a second opinion. Even if all it does is give you peace of mind, it's so worth it.

best of luck to you bud, you made a good choice going to a derm. they will be way more knowlegable and up to date on this topic compared to your fam doc.
