Pitted Glass... suggested remedies?
Hey, so I did a quick search and couldn't really find much on the topic, but I was wondering if anyone has found something that works on the pitted glass of canopy lids. It's getting to the point where its beginning to affect the amount of light reaching my tank...
Any pointers or tricks you've found would be appreciated...

Swap the glass. Any process that could polish the glass to clarity will cost more than replacement glass and be a major hassle. I've looked into this before, and only cerium oxide is easily available for polishing glass. You need a high speed drill and a buffing pad, plus the oxide and lots of water (as a lube).

How big a tank are we talking about? A new canopy isn't that expensive in most cases.
Since the glass is siliconed in place, you should be able to get it out by carefully working a think knife blade between the glass and canopy frame. However, since you'd replace the glass anyway, you could break the glass first, and remove it little by little. Wear gloves for protection if going this. You'll have lots of share pieces. |
