...this is how I say aponogeton ulvaceus:

"ah pawn og it on you'll vay see us"

How wrong am I; please describe how to say it.

Plant Geek, http://www.plantgeek.net/ has a pronunciation guide for most plants, including this one, I'm pretty sure. You have to sign up to the site to get that feature, though.

I always thought it was pronounced "Ah pawn o jee ton", but I could very well be wrong.

I have thought of it as
uh PAWN o GET on

The 'uh' is like the upside down e that is used to symbolize the sound of many un-accented vowels, including the e in the.

Some accent on the 'PAWN'.

Long 'o'.

'GET' just like the word, some accent.

'on' just like the word.
