Java Fern

I just bought a nice decent size java fern today for $3.70. I was wondering if it could only live in a aquarium?

I was thinking maybe placing it in a pot w/ soil and growing it from there.

Would shultz aquatic soil have the strength and nutrients to grow java fern with 55watt of lighting?

Any advice is welcomed.

Java fern is also a terrestrial plant, so it can be grown emmersed. I have never attempted it, so I am not sure how it would go...

as far as a terrestrial plant, dont do it. It needs to be at least 1/3 submerged, and does best in aquariums or very moist vivariums. I've learned from experience... pullet out a piece of wood, planted some baby java fern on it for about 30 mins. and kept dripping water drops on the leaves, but all the old big fern dried up and had black splotches on the leaves... bad, unhealthy, and ugly... dont plant it terrestrially.

Now dont forget, just as emersed grown plants go through a meltdown and regrowth of a sorts, the opposite is true of submersed grown plants going to emersed growth.
They will definately go backwards before they go forwards.

BTW, you need to pull that fern up some out of the substrate or it will fail miserably. You are better off tying it to a small stone or piece of wood for better health of the plant. You cannot bury the plants rhyzome.

Yeah I was just talking to depthC earlier yesterday and he told me. So I pulled it out and it's basically sort of on top of the substrate since it has some weight at the end that's holding it down. Thanks for telling me, yeah it is a nice piece
