I've had good luck just soaking driftwood for a few weeks, so as to get rid of most of the tannens.

It depends on where you live. Here in Oregon most of the driftwood is conifer based. Not good to put in the tank. If you know the wood is hardwood then soak it for a while to get it to sink and remove the sand and salt and what tannins might be left in it. Then just to be on the safe side boil it for an hour.

If by "Beach" you mean beach sand, make sure you rinse it well because of the salt. I would also sterilize it by boiling it.

It also depends on the type and size of sand. Silica sand may be ok, but beach sand may contain too many carbonates and make the ph basic.

If by "Beach" you mean bleach....I would not recommend it...

If it's beach sand stay away from it. First off it's almost impossible to get all the salt out of it. And then there are all those shell fragments to deal with that are going to drive your kH and gH way up.
