I've never used EI dosing, but I thought you were supposed to dose 6 days and 50% water change on day 7. I could be wrong though.

With EI dosing you should be changing 50% every week. EI is a surplus dose, so the frequent large water changes remove the excess buildup so that it won't harm fish.

It is only if you don't use CO2 and don't use Excel, that you shouldn't do large frequent water changes. When you do a water change you introduce a lot of CO2, but that only lasts a short time, causing the CO2 concentration to go up and down. That can trigger an algae bloom.

Nope, fish seem healthier an dhappier as a general thing, but plenty of cases where 1x a month works fine.

Still, to error on the safe side, then slowly back off to see.

With EI, the point is to error on the safe side and do frequent water changes weekly, then add ferts, this reduces any build up and prevent anything from running out.

It's a simple concept aquarist have used for many many decades, EI is just a silly name ascribed to it for plant tank dosing.

The % change can be 50%, but it can be more or less(say 25% or 75%), the 50% amount is arbitrary.

You can predict the build up using wet's modeling Calculator for water changes and dosing:
