Is it safe to say (if all other things stay constant) that when your plants stop pearling it is time to fertilize. I am on a weekly fertilizing schedule, however last week my plants stoped pearling mid week. I do a water change of 30-50% weekly.

Not necessarily. When plants are pearling, it is a sign of good health, but if they are not, it is still possible they are in excellent healthy, but simply that the water is still capable of absorbing the O2 the plants are producing. Particularly if you have a large fish load that is consuming the O2 as it is released into the water.

I've noticed that if I don't keep my canister filter clean my plants stop pearling. I don't know why, but after a filter cleaning and a water change a few days before I clean the filter my plants do start to pearl again.

You might want to check the CO2 levels also. If they are low I think that will effect your pearling.

Just a thought, but if when you clean your filter you eliminate some bacteria, that might free up some ammonia for the plants which is easier for them to use?

Or on the other hand if you let the filter media get clogged then you set up an environment where bacteria can grow that will break down nitrate.

Like the de-nitrator bacteria Rex? That is a good point, but that means some part fo the filter is oxygen free? You'd have to have quite a messy filter, but it is possible.

Just like that. I have Rena Filstars. It's pretty easy to move some plants and stir up stuff and have at least one of the sponges get so full they get clogged pretty good.
