Very much so, in an established aquarium is should be 0. However, if your aquarium is established, you don't have to check it unless you suspect something is wrong. Or you can just check all your parameters once a week.

The most important parameters in a planted tank are pH, KH, Nitrate (NO3), Phosphate (PO4), and you can find CO2 from pH and KH.
