I've been experimenting with scew-in cfs and I'm getting wonderful results. I've got 4x30W 6400K bulbs that I paid $6 a piece for. The whole setup is dirt cheap. For pics and more info http://mondo.home.insightbb.com

Too bad you could not make some better reflectors for those lights. In one picture it really shows how much light you are losing.

Eventually I might make some wooden boxes, but any more light and I think I'm going to have major algae problems.

Nice tank. The set up is very nice and clean, but the light lose is terrible. You need to do something to make those rain gutters more effective for you.

mondo i've sworn off these screw in cf's. will never ever buy them again.
the story: got home from a day at several shopping outlets. had purchased, amongst other things, 4 of these fluor cf's for use on my tank. the lowest price happened to be 24$ canadian apiece. unfortunately for me, they were all in the same bag. so, what's the saying, curiosity did what to the cat? while i was in another room, my youngest cat, prometheus, HAD to go over to all the bags and sniff them. how and why i'm not sure, but he got one of the bag handles around his neck. then he moved, and the bag moved with him. again this happened. by this time he got spooked. the rest was like out of a three stooges episode: the terrified cat running from one room to another, the bag in tow, up and down the stairs, terrified; me running behind him, shouting, cursing, trampling through a sea of broken glass. so i ended up with ONE bulb after spending $100. never bought another again. thought this was worth sharing for a laugh... |

i have 6 compact flourescent lamps over a 30 gallon, each is rated at 30 watts, they are supposed to be some extra high output too. My father is an electrician, told me these go for about $35 dollars a peice (US currency). MAJOR LIGHTING. only problem with these is that they are fitted inside my hood such that i have to take the hood off to get into the tank, shoulda thought before i was set in my building plan.
