My local gas distributor will not fill a CO2 tank "on the spot". I would have to swap out tanks each time I go for a refill. I was told $80 first time out and $20 for a swapped 5lb refill ( I hate living in the NY metro area!). I asked for Food Grade CO2, and was told they didn't have any, all he could give me was the CO2 that is used for Kegerators, which is the same thing I believe. This is the closest source. Anyone else have any experience with "tank swapping"? What should I look for or be aware of?

Thanks,
Mike

If you can drink it in your beer, it's food grade. CO2 is CO2. It should be fine for your fish tank.

I live in Clifton, NJ but I go to Trenton, NJ on the weekends to visit my parents. I refill my tank in PA for 12$ each.

You are going to refill this tank every few months so not a big deal.

Dr. Jay if you live in Clifton, NJ, then I am sure you know AGL over on Hazel Street! I'm over in Hawthorne. Do you know of any other compressed gas dealers in our area?

Swapping out tanks is no big deal unless you plan on keeping the tank for a really long time and not taking it back (most welding shops have a 90 day limit or something) or if you've bought your own tank. There are several welding/gas shops in my area and only about two of them will just FILL a CO2 tank. One's $9.75 for 5 lb. and the other was like $12 for 5 lb.

exchanging is very common, usually you don't have your tank filled on the spot for welding cylinders. The thing that confused me about what you said is that they charge you 80 bucks the rfirst time. If you have a cylinder, then they should not charge you that much, it should just be an exchange. Where you only pay for the gas. This is actually a better deal than you might think. This way you don't have to worry about the five year test thing that all cylinders are required to pass. They take care of it for you.

Good Luck

~Doug

VERY good point, Doug! I'd never thought of that!

The $80 for the first tank is a "deposit" on the 5lb or 10lb bottle (filled). Each time you need a refill, you swap bottles, and they charge you $20 for a refilled bottle. Great point about the five year test on the CO2 bottle.

but if you own one bottle, they should take that as your deposit

But I don't own a bottle! I will pay them more at first ($80= deposit on bottle + CO2). When that first bottle is empty, I bring it back, pay them $20 ($20= CO2 refill). No need to buy a bottle, I'm "renting" theirs. Almost like the way we used to get milk ( boy I'm dating myself!!).

Boy, that milk comment really IS dating. I mean, I might be way off, but I'd guess that milk hasn't been sold that way for at least 30 years or something, so yeah...dating.

Oh, BTW...just kidding! lol

Anyway, IMO, $20 for a 5 lb. CO2 tank swap out is a ripoff. Don't know if there are any other tank places in your area, but if you haven't already, I'd DEFINITELY look for some. Check out welding supply places, fire extinguisher places, and just plain compressed gas places. Hopefully you'll be able to find something reasonable. I mean, shoot...my 5 lb. ALUMINUM CO2 tank was only $35 purchased.

Talk about dating yourself, anyone remember the Milk Machines that used to be on the corners? Although I am a bit young for those, there was one by my grandparents and I do remember using it. As far as the price for CO2, I am in the NY-NJ metro area. EVERYTHING is more expensive than it needs to be. What we often think is a good price to others is a rip, and what others think is a good price, we often find to be a steal. Try looking at home prices around here!
