I couldn't say no.

30 gal cube.

Had the Coral life 20" 96 watt fixture but it died. I went to the LFS trying to get a replacement and they didn;t have one, but they did give me an AMAZING deal on a 250 hqi. I know its WAY WAY too much light. but i got it for less than 200 bucks, (pendant bulb and ballast.)

I want to make it work.

Ideas?

Already running compressed co2, tank has been up for alittle over 2 years.

It's kind of difficult with HQI MH. You can raise the fixture farther from the tank and get the appropriate light for the 30 gallon, but the problem lies in how bright the bulbs are. You might find with raising the fixture too high that it'll blind everyone in the room.

The alternative is to build a canopy over the tank that keeps the light in, but the trade-off is that you might have heat issues because of it. That can be countered with fans, but you might have some work cut out for you to make it work without nuking the tank.

If the pendant is designed well so that that light is directed downward, you might just get away with doing nothing it all. The only issue I can think of is how bright those bulbs are.. sitting and watching TV or anything else is pretty awful if you have a MH bulb blinding you.

the "splash" as i call it isn't really that bad, I've got the ridiculous 15 watt fixture that tanks come with in front of the MH bulb so while the tank is glowing like the surface of the sun, im not getting any direct light off the bulb. I had to do that with my 96 watt quad as well.

I just don;t want it to turn my tank into a mess.

raise the light way up high over the tank. lay down next to it and tan.
lol. just kidding

i dont know the pricing but maybe you could sell it and profit and then buy the light you want

HAHAHA, My girlfriend has already called it "crazy" and sarcastically asked if she could tan with it. I smiled when i said, "well if i pulled the UV filter off, yes, yes you could". I think Im gonna have to make a hood and throw some fans on it.

Before I hung it over the tank, i set it up pointing at the white ceiling. MY GOD, more light that a medium sized bedroom would ever, ever need. I quickly realized that my efforts to control girlfriend and dog hair buildup are failing.

LOL...yes, they really are that bright. When I first started into SW reef tanks, I was working as an electrical specialist and had access to 15 400w metal halide pendants from an industrial plant. They were going to be trashed and I said...nooooo and swiped them up. Later I put 2 400 watt lights over my 75g thinking.. No amount of light can be too much light for corals! However, there is such a thing as too much light in one room.. and I found out that if you need to wear sunglasses to feed the fish, perhaps you've gone too far.

I had a 60 gallon SW reef tank and decided that going to a smaller planted tank would cheaper than getting that back set up and re-lit. That was a mistake.

I miss my VHO bulbs.

OH and looking at my water temps, I think the light needs to go back.

85 is going to cook everything, i now have an air pump in there trying to help cool it down.

And its dark.
