OK, so everything is going "as planned", I picked up some hygrophila from the LFS so I have some faster growing plant mass in order to avoid a repeat green algae after I fertalized too much... I also picked up some nice looking val. That day, my new impellers had come from Big Als, well anyway, you get the idea. Today, I get home from my violin group and voila! The powerhead seems as though it is unplugged? Well, it wasn't, but it was slightly warm... Hmmm.... Did it overheat? I tried cleaning it out and starting it up again, nothing... I must have bad luck with powerheads!

Any suggestions besides "Get a new one...". Also, anyone else had trouble with Rio (mine is a 600) powerheads? This is used for a gravel vac reactor by the way...

Tim is the stem with the magnet hung up? If it is not seated perfectly it can do that and if it is a new impellor , did they send you the correct one?
It might be oversized.
They can be finicky things ! Take it apart and be sure it is free spinning...all powerheads generate a little heat so I wouldn't worry much about that. Even when working properly they get warm.
Try a Q-Tip in the hole and clean it out.

If that dont work , .... you know what ya gotta do.

Good Luck bro...

OK, I'll try it after school today and see what happens... at least this problem doesn't create noise!! I did compare the size of the impeller to the original and they are the same, so that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks!

I've never had a Rio melt on me but I must have read several dozen threads on reef central about Rios melting. They've got some quality issues.
