Free Lecture on Aquatic Plants and Aquascaping

The Greater Seattle Aquarium Society (GSAS) is pleased to sponsor a free lecture on aquatic plants and aquascaping by Karen Randall, aquarist, author, judge, photographer, former editor of The Aquatic Gardener, and aquarium society activist (Northeast Council of Aquarium Societies, Boston Aquarium Society, and Aquatic Gardeners Association). She has collected aquatic plants in Brazil and Thailand, and recently returned from speaking at a massive pet expo in Germany.

The lecture will be next Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 at 7:30PM at Seattle Pacific University; Otto Miller Hall; Room 109; West Nickerson Street and 3rd Avenue West

Doors will open around 7:10PM; the meeting will start at about 7:30PM

The lecture will be followed by a short auction

Open to the public, no entrance fee
Family friendly but no childcare provided
Free parking, accessible building, no furry or feathered pets

I will be coming all the way from oakanogan (4 1/2 hours away). Just wondering but what will be at the auction?

Hi Caton,

We have a "mini-auction" at the end of each meeting where members bring in their extra fish and plants; there is usually a pretty good selection. I think I will be bringing some Java 'Trident' and maybe some Nymphoides sp. ‘Taiwan’.

We are expecting a large turnout, I encourage you to be there shortly after the doors open at 7:10. Guests are always welcome! I'm the HAP chair, introduce yourself and I will be glad to answer any questions. -Roy

I'm so bummed not to be able to make this but I just had surgery and can't get out of the house for a couple of weeks. This is the absolute worst meeting for me to miss as I've been looking forward to seeing Karen Randall.

Any chance this will be recorded and available to members for download?

Hi Digsy,

I will check and get back with you, but I believe that Erik Olson will be doing video of both lectures, the "Members Only" lecture on Sunday (Karen will speak on her two plant collecting trips to Thailand) and the regular meeting lecture (aquatic plants and aquascaping) on Tuesday.

From the GSAS meets I've attended, 30 is on the small side (i think the only one I attended with 30-35 people was the December christmas meet). Normally it's a pretty full house, I'd say somewhere in the 80ish range easy.

Are you still in Seattle like your profile indicates; I thought you would be in TX for a month or so by now! How are things going down there? Getting warm yet? BTW, Seattle had the 11th rainiest May on record last month....you got out just in time! LOL!

We have rented the largest classroom on campus, Otto Miller Hall #109. We used the same classroom last month of Ad Konings cichlid lecture last month, it was 3/4 full, probably about 80 people.

How cool! Karen Randall came by our home yesterday, took pictures of my tanks, and discussed the "early days" of aquascaping and plant growing for about an hour. I had a great time and learned a lot.

I am looking forward to both lectures, the regular GSAS meeting on Tuesday that is open to the public and the private "members only" meeting on Sunday where she will share her two adventures during collecting trips to Thailand.
