diy co2 with a hob filter

I have a 280 emperor bio-wheel filter system. Would a diy co2 system even work with this set up? Thought co2 would just dissipate before plants could make use of the co2. Would Excel be my only real use?

You could use DIY CO2, though the bio-wheel would off gas a lot of it. An option is to remove the wheel, and then raise the tank's water level so that any splashing from the HOB filter is minimized.
