Help with diy retro fit for 37g eclipse?

Hey all, I bought a 37 Gallon Marineland Eclipse tank, and the lighting is really throwing me for a loop on how to change it up, get more wattage so I can do high light plants.

Currently, it has two 18w T8s, and has a clear little plastic shield to prevent water splashes from damaging the lights.

I like the aesthetic of the hood being all sleek and cool, but if I can't find a better solution for lights...well, I was hoping for some inspiration or advice. I really don't have ANY experience in modifying set ups, but here's to hoping.
