Vicki Costley’s article on Classic Eheim
There was a great article and some instructions provided by the late Vicki Costley on cleaning the classic Eheim from this address http://www.wheelpost.com/EheimClassic.html
but the page is no longer working. Anyone know if this is posted some where else?

I have looked for it several times but have been unable to find it. It seems when Vicki's website was turned over to her friends to maintain, that part of the website was lost.
That was a great article. I know Vicki would not mind my telling everyone that the wonderful article on the best way to clean an Eheim classic canister was not hers. It was in fact written by another wonderful hobbyist, a very kind woman who I knew only as Phyl. Phyl was the owner of a web shop called True Aquarium Plants. She sold plants and CO2 equipment. She was a kind and helpful woman just as Vicki was. Quite sadly, Phyl passed away also. Mike

I think that Robert at AquaBotanic bought the business from Phyl, so he might have that article on his computer somewhere.

As for the percentage breakdown, I have no idea, that is exactly how the original article was. Matt

It was good reading this article over again having read it some years back. I have several questions I would like to ask regarding it and your cleaning process.
1. When you rinse your EhfiMech out do you use tap water as indicated by this article or do you rinse with tank water during a water change? I ask wondering if the bacteria will be killed by your tap water. 2. Do you replace a partial about of your EhfiMech every cleaning? Do you/have you ever boiled it out like this article says to rejuvenate it? 3. On a side note do you use the spray bar for return water? (I have been but under the surface level) Or do you use the single water return that Eheim makes that is well under the water level? Thanks much

You do not need to replace the Ehfimech at all unless you're really seeing a breakdown/or that it needs replacement. The Ehfimech is just the mechanical filter -- thus you can use tap water if you like. It's the Ehfisubstrat or whatever that you need to use tankwater -- that's where the majority of the bacteria resides.

Well done Corigan!! This thing is a keeper!!
Teeitup...I use the spray bar and have mine rigged all the way to the bottom of my tank so it shoots upward (no surface disturbance) and my cories like to be blasted upwards. I could understand how boiling used Efhisubstrat (sp?) can rejuvinate it...kill the bacteria, and clean it out...but I'm only wondering if any of the dead particles remain inside? I only have a small layer of it and rarely change the coarse pad...I only rinse it in old tank water and replace the fine mesh pad.
