Help! Ph low (2.5g)

Hello,

I just checked my 2.5g tanks water parameters which I just checked a week ago but now my ph is down to 6.8. Ammonia and Nitrites are 0. Nitrates are 40-80ppm. I have two guppies in the tank and have never had a problem with the ph before. The tank has been set up since the third week of june. So it is cycled. Can anyone help me? I just did a water/gravel cleaning/changing to help bring down the nitrates. But what about he ph? THanks Nemomom

We also need to know the KH. A titration - dropper kit is accurate.

I am not sure what KH is since I am new. I checked my testing kit but it does not have a KH. My general hardness is 7 degrees. As for water changes I do them once a week about 20-25% change.

What did the pH drop down from Nemomom? A pH of 6.8 really isn't that low, unless it has dropped drastically.

Are you injecting CO2?

Hello, well it dropped from 7.2 to 6.8 in just a week. No CO2 is being injected. It is just one of those minibow 2.5g tanks with live plants and two guppies. A whisper filter. Now, I read somewhere that a low ph can cause a guppy's tail to start to split. Actually, one of my guppy's has been having problems with a split tail and little pieces missing off the end. But no sign of infection or disease and was wondering if the low ph could be the problem.

What did it drop from? I was thrilled when I was able to raise my ph up to 6.8 last week ....

I still don't think a pH of 6.8 is very bad. Heck a pH of 7.0 is neutral, right!

Do you have any driftwood in there Nemomom?

Nope, no drift wood. Just a few plants and an ornamental piece. I guess that I will test again tomorrow and just keep a look out. My fish seems just fine. Maybe I am getting too worked up over the values. I tested my tap water and it is 7.0 so... Thanks to all that helped. I will let you know if something else happens.

I've had male guppies in water in the pH 6.6-6.9 range with no problems. No split tails or anything like that and they seemed healthy and vibrant.

When you test tap water you need to test it 24 hours after it is drawn from the tap.

I'm sorry but I feel the need to point out that both the 2.5 and the 5gallon tanks are overstocked. a 5 gallon is good for a betta, and a couple ghost shrimp. a 2.5 gallon is not a place to put fish.
