Hey, I was wondering if there is anywhere that I can buy substrate on Oahu. I checked Pet Land in Kahala and a bag of flourite is $50, and modern pets doesn't have it. I'm going to go check Pets Plus some time this weekend, but I was wondering if there is any place that has either flourite or SMS cheap? I'm not able to attend the fish meetings cause I am busy on Friday nights, so I'm wondering if there's any stores that sell? Thanks for the help
Not sure if I was supposed to put this here or in the substrate forums.
Thanks for the help.
Well, I was initially looking to cover my 55 gallon, but I decided to just stay low tech with that. I'm just looking for maybe 1 bag to cover a 10 gallon, maybe 2 for another 20 tall later. I was thinking of just going to Home Depot to look for Schultz Aquatic Soil.
And I don't really know about their fish selection since I haven't really looked at it much. I think I've seen gouramis, but not sure. They have feeder shrimp, that's all I have seen.
did u get a chance to check pets plus on ward yet? I just went there tonight and got a bag of flourite for $37. (the price is actually $38+tax, but I have HAS membership so I got 10% off) The also have Flora Base for the same price, but I don't have any experince with that; I heard it's alittle on the light side, so I just stuck with what I've used before and bought the flourite.
Really? I thought it was about $45 at pets plus, so I'd rather just get ADA AS from kalihi pets. I don't have the 10% discount though, so is it before or after discount?
Not too bad, but a $10 difference, I don't know if I want to spend more to get ADA. If it was something like $15 or $20, I would. Maybe I'll just try find shultz aquatic soil for now, and when I come back from Japan, I'll get some ADA AS or something.
you know, if anyone wants to do an ADA order I have the means to get it at a really cheap price. I initially brought it in but have stopped since Jojo brings it in and not a lot of people were interested. PM and I can get the details out. Peace.
Let me just clear the air. I am not selling ADA products but I can bring it from Aquaforest at the same price but with the shipping costs. The last time I did an order, each AS bag was around $30. This is not a guarantee since shipping costs have gone up. The order has to be a minimum of 2 bags of AS and more than 12 people to do this. If you collaborate with other's and let me know, I'll go out of my way to see if this shipping company is still in business. Thanks, Eric.
Eh, I wouldn't mind getting 2 bags. Though the thing is to find more than 12 people... None of my friends are into tanks except one who is already in the maindland xD
regarding the shultz aquatic soil, I tried that before since it was really cheap at home depot. didnt' really have a good expereince with it, the soil seemed to get really compacted after awhile and the vals I had planted in that tank couldn't root into the soil anymore compared to before w/ just plain gravel the vals had extensive root systems. ymmv though.
I see... I guess I'll get it for my small less planted cichlid tank. want the more natural look and a bit better quality than the normal gravel. thanks for the warning though.
I would use the ADA soil vs Flora Base. Belive it or not if you factor the price, ADA is alot cheaper vs the other stuff that is out there. Flora Base $38 for 12lbs, ADA $50 for 21lbs. That would be $76 for 2 bags of FB (24lbs) vs. ADA $50 for 21lbs. Jus a thought....
Lol, not sure if it'd be good to take from the beach, but I guess we do. Also a bit fine in some areas.
And the color is just like SMS, a darkish brown with some orange pieces.
I took the first quote as being about the color of the sand being similar to the SMS. I said the color of the sand would look nice in a tank.
The increased hardness of the water from crushed coral, if that is indeed what your sand there is made from, would affect the plants more so than the fish, but you may be able to make plants and fish both adapt.
I was only half serious I guess, I'd be quite wary of it too. The dark color would be really nice looking though I think. Worth a thought. If it contains crushed coral, I believe it would increase your hardness, which may not be in line with your goals for the tank.
Lol, sorry, I got 4 hrs of sleep last night, meant oil dri was similar to SMS! And there is a black sand beach on maui http://volcanogallery.com/Places-Punaluu.htm
And I'm just using oil dri, don't like it too much since it smells funny and also really dirty, but most I can really afford.
