Fissidens Splatchnobroides

I have aquired fissidens Splatchnobroides and having ready much negative on this moss and the company aquatic magic decided to document the plants progression. In my main aquarium 120gal well lit, pond soil substrate, plus minor CO2 infusion, I tied the fissiden splat to rocks with thread. Since I did this my 15" plec dislodged a fair amount of the moss but growth was quickly evident. Today I took my remaining two squares and using a heavy guage stainless steel mesh to the Aquatic Magic advice and created a matt. The last pic was the first taken, the next two were taken one week later. With the naked eye I can see some growth.

nice to hear some growth. i'm awaiting my order of splatchnobroides from aqmagic. aren't you afraid of the rust/corrosion of the metal mesh? keep updating with the progress.

That growth is as good as it gets submerged. It is terrestrial so it grows up to try to reach air, but that's as far as it uusually gets.

Good luck!

I have failed at growing this moss in my tank. It looked as though fronds were lifting and then nothing. I had placed a square on a emergent rock in my 5gal Betta/ Amazon sword tank and it has put out beautiful bright green moss. I have attempted to rescue my steel mesh, placed on plates and kept moist. Although I have had to weed the mesh I think I will eventually get my little green lawns. I will then document how the fresh green growth survives imersion.

In conclusion, fissidens splatchnobroides will grow well on an emergant rock but cannot survive imersed.

My fissidens from Aqua Magic arrived looking much better than yours... still quite green. BUT I bought it thinking it would grow immersed in my 10g! I was planning to glue bits of it to my rocks, and also to net it over some stones? What to do?

If you are going to experiment let me know how it goes, my belief is that your terrerium buddy will have greater success in growing it. It really does look quite beautiful grown emergent.

Darn it! Maybe I should try adding a floating "bog mat" to my tank, just for the heck of it...

I don't mean to treat you like a noobie, but are you sure that you got the same species of fissidens as nesopheus did? I know that some species of fissidens can grow under water quite well in the right conditions.

That's OK, I AM a noobie... all I can say is that the plant I ordered was ID'd as Fissidens splachnobryoides. I guess we'll see! I have two portions, so maybe I'll plant one and keep one aside emersed.

Me I love to experiment. After ordering fissidens splatchnobroides from aquatic magic I found that many people were not able to grow it imersed. I decided to give it a try and wrote my experience here. I hope they provided you with a plant that will grow into a beautiful lawn, if not let me know.

Wish I saw this thread a few month ago. I bought the same stuff you did from the same place. It came all brown and cut down to nothing stuck in that mesh. I tried for a month growing it and got a tiny bit of green. I had it with co2 and good light but still nothing. After over a month with pretty much no growth And all other plants doing well. I gave up and throw it in the trash. Waste of money.

I now found some Fissidens fontanus and it's will be here in a few days. that's the stuff I wanted in the first place.

I am glad to see it was not just me. I believe you that this plants does not do well immersed. I bought weeping moss from aqua magic and flame moss. The weeping moss is not weeping moss but the flame moss is very nice. I am not going to buy from them again.

Glade you got yours to grow.

I bought F. splachnobryoides from aquatic magic as well. It took a while to get it but it arrived in decent shape. I bought 2 of the squares. One I took the mesh off, rinsed it and mashed it up and let it attach to rocks. It's been living in my shrimp tank, quite happily, for several months now. It is very green and growing!

The other square I just plopped onto the bottom of my betta tank, same thing. Very happy moss, green and growing. It looks way better than when I got it, so I don't think it's going to die now.

I am quite certain this is F. splachnobryoides. The star moss they sell, that's a different experience. lol
