First nano

Picked it up on kijiji for a sweet deal. Any suggestions on what I could do to improve the scape without taking up to much space? Also what is the best way to plant the banana plant?

This is purely a personal preference, but I would probably start by changing out the white gravel for a black sand. Having a finer substrate in that tank, will make it look larger, and black tends to bring out the colors of fish and plants the best. Lot of people also use white sand, however, and can be a nice look. I've just never made it work well for me.

Also, the 2 plants you have in there also make the tank look much smaller the it is. To me it looks like that tanks is probably about a half gallon, but realistically, I suspect it's much larger then that. Small leafed plants will make a small tank appear larger. Since you're lighting appear to be stock, and probably low light, I would stick with smaller crypts, maybe some anubias petits, and java moss on a few carefully stacked smaller rocks.

As for the two plants you have, if you decide you want to keep those, I would suggest burying the bottom half of the bananas of the banana plant in the substrate. If memory serves, eventually the bananas will fall off, and it will root out of the plant where they came from, but burying them isn't good for them.

If you want to keep the banana you better have some pretty BA lighting cause they require a lot of light. I agree about the black gravel, I always use it in every aquarium. .......pretty much just do what Pooky says lol

You're right Pooky. It's actually a 0.9 gal model. I'll move those plants to my bigger tank for now. Can anyone suggest a plant that will be "tall" in this tank to give the betta some shade? I'll get some black sand tomorrow after work, never had anything that dark before but always wanted to try.

Guppy Grass works well, also Various Vals can grow decent sizes. Don't forget floaters are also a option, like Frog Bit, Duckweed, Mini Lettuce, Red Root Floaters etc.

IMO that tank is way too small for a betta, they (any fish really, i wouldn't keep fish at all in anything that small) should have at least a 5 gallon tank, maybe four. i'd get a bigger tank for the betta whenever possible and put shrimp in this tank. would prevent problems down the road.
