Fluval Edge ideas

Hello everyone,

I have a Fluval Edge that I bought (umm...three years ago, I think). I bought it as a nano tank for a Wennerae mantis shrimp that I got in some live rock from Tampa Bay Saltwater. My mantis has sadly passed on. I enjoyed the mantis but don't plan on another Wennerae. If I get a new mantis at some point, I want to get a larger species that will require a larger aquarium. Anyhoo, I have decided to move all the rock, corals, etc into one of my larger marine aquariums and convert the Edge into a freshwater planted aquarium. I have only maintained saltwater aquariums in the past, never freshwater. My dad always kept saltwater tanks so I picked up the hobby from him. I have gotten interested lately in freshwater planted aquariums, vivariums, and terrariums. I need some advice on plants that would do well in a 6g planted aquarium and some suggestions for some small schooling fish. Also, I was never a fan of the lighting on the Edge. I have the Edge tank that came with the halogen lights. I removed the swing arm and the halogen lights in favor of a Coralife 8" light fixture that contains a 10,000K CFL bulb and an actinic bulb. I modded the light to fit inside the hood. Anyhoo, would this light fixture work with a planted freshwater tank? Or do I need to get a new light? I don't want to use the halogens. I simply didn't like them or the spotlighting effect they had. If I need a new light fixture, what would you all suggest that would fit in the hood?

You should try the coralife colormax 6,700'k CFL its the same size/wattage as the 50/50 you were using. I bet youy can keep low-tech plants fine with the Colormax setup.
