Gotta Catch 'Em All

xenxes's Aerogarden 6 Elite (unconventional nano "tank")
Dumb Aquaponics thought experiment, will RCS survive in here with a tomato plant currently growing inside? I know I can't see the shrimp without lifting the cover, but I wonder if food + inverts will provide sufficient nutrients for the plant.
![]() I checked the water, ph7 | 0/0/0. No more fert dosing, only sparse feeding. Day 1: tossed in 6 RCS culls, some snails.

It will be interesting to see the results. Many terrestrial plants have extremely delicate root hairs, so there is the possibility that the shrimp will damage those. But then, since the roots will have adapted to aquatic conditions, maybe they won't be so fragile. Also, I'm wondering whether or not there's a possibility for the tomato to poison the shrimp. Tomatoes come from a family of plants that is well-known for the number of unusually deadly plants (like nightshade and datura) and also the same family as tobacco. So, there is that potential that they could be harmful to the shrimp.
All that being said, my guess is, as long as you don't over do the ferts and obviously don't use pesticides, I think the shrimp could do alright. Just keep the water fresh (doing frequent partial water changes). |

Lol TY for the insulpliment
Oh yeah... tomato is poisonous to my kitty The plant definitely matters, but tomato was one of the few plants I could get to grow without getting one of their expensive kits. I will not be doing water changes, only top offs. I never change my tank water :/

I tried strawberries--died, wanted to do herbs cause it made most sense but cilantro is a no-go. I tried pepper seeds, but none ever took off. Lettuce might be best? Going to try that next.
Day 2: tossed in some rilis
