I am planning a 28 gallon container pond with a lotus. What are some options for planting?
Place plant in pot or straight in container?
Can I use Amazonia aquasoil and small river stones?
Is there a better substrate choice?
Wouldn't planting the lotus in a pot with holes in it, submerged into the container make it easier to clean out?
Edit: set it up last night! Just waiting on plants from Robert at Aqua Botanic..pics to come.
Hi Dara, I did get it at Home Depot. Sorry that does not help. I just planted the lotus straight into the aquasoil through the stones. Thanks for the compliment.
nice! i can't wait to play around with container ponds this summer. however, we have a short pond season here. it's gonna take another month or so to warm up and the first frosts come at just about the time the plants have grown in.
that C. wendtii looks like it's holding its own. how big will the lotus get?
Thanks guys. The lotus is called 'Red Children'. I don't think it gets huge like some. The wendtii is 'sunset', it looks it's best out here in the pond. I have it also in low light, and high light w/ CO2.
The weirdest thing happened today!{along with a bunch of other weird stuff :confused1:}
The pond was off, so I was trying to figure out why. Plugged the cord into a different socket, still no pump. Took the pump out and into the kitchen sink. Rinsed it out, knocked it on the side of the sink & got it going again. Now mind you the pond has been getting super overflowing with all this rain, several times in the last few days. So I go back out, reset the pump, and I am siphoning off the excess water..and what do I see? A baby clown killifish! I had put a pair in there in the beginning..they lasted what I thought, only a few days because the temperature plunged. So either the parents lived longer than I thought, laid eggs, but stayed hidden. They are still in there, but they are staying hidden. Or the original female was much smaller than I remember, though I really don't think that's the case. So anyway, I caught her and brought her in to be with the others in the tank.
Thank you. You are right! Since the lily and lotus pads have covered the surface, the temp is staying much lower. I still have two ABN longfin plecos in it. I am waiting for a couple endlers today from invertz factory{great guy, Pedro is!}, and a member here has offered to send me some least killifish, after a bad experience with a seller on AB. People can still be nice, isn't that great! It has been raining daily, so I haven't done water changes lately. I have to siphon off the excess, and it gets in and around the liner without leaking. I am thinking after it gets wintered inside, next season I will set it up without the liner, it would look much better. Not much luck getting my marginal plants to break the surface, except the mermaid weed. I might have the other one too deep perhaps. I noticed some sites sell little baskets for plants. I am going to check out the dollar store for a cheapo basket.
Heheh..the one on the back is a sunset crypt, on the left there is some mermaid weed, but I cut the one that popped and submerged it. In the back right there is some sweet flag, but I think it is too deep. I need a basket or something to get it up closer to the surface. The lotus and lillys are starting to grow upward. This morning there were a few leaves standing up out of the water. But then the rain pushed them back down. I think it's doing pretty good so far. Tomorrow I am expecting some het formosas for it, from a very nice member.
Last year I grew a crypt in the tub. I guess I should find one growing up in one of my tanks that is not where I want it. I did not grow mine emerged though.
I love that Jack in the pulpit Wings,it's awesome.:icon_smil
I have a fish story to tell~
I had a bad experience with a seller on that fish selling website. He sent me 10 het formosas-least killifish, all crammed into 4 oz. of water, in an ordinary box with no styrofoam protection. He also told me after the auction that he didn't know when he could ship, that he was going out of town for a week or two. Next thing I knew, a week later, the package arrived without any word from the seller. Unfortunately for the fish, as they were all doa. A member here that had a similar experience with the same seller, saw that and contacted me, offering the same fish for the cost of shipping only. A very nice guy. He packed the fish correctly, and they arrived yesterday. He sent me 8 fish, but in transit 4 babies were born! They were so tiny and cute. So, anyway..now I have some cool fish in the pond that will eat mosquito larvae, if some should happen to get in the pond.
Endlers or least killifish (hets right?) would be perfect in this tank. I'd imagine that clown killies would be too delicate, and Im really surprised that you have BNs in there.
It's really fun. I put some strange plant that just pops up in my outdoor plants in pots, into the folds of the liner. I'll get a pic of it, maybe tomorrow. It has tiny leaves, and is bright green.
nice! do you have an idea when the lilies might bloom?
that crypt is still going strong. it's interesting that that plant can take it right outside in the open air and it doesn't dry up. does any water splash on its leaves.
Well, it has been raining a lot. And if it looks dry, I splash some from the pond on it.But mostly, it gets all it needs from hanging into the water.I've never had lilies, but I think they have to grow upward first. It's starting to do that now.
Thanks & thanks Cl. There are several lilys, not sure what type. I know a couple were rubra, but they are underwater. The lotus is still hanging in there..alive, but I think the lilys are overpowering it.
No flowers yet:icon_sad: I did get an ID on the weed, let me see if I can find it.
