can i get decent lighting for a 20 gallon for under 40 bucks? i went on the internet i looked at the retrofit stuff and its pretty expensive. i want to be able to plant a decent amount of plants.
That would be pretty tough, unless you were quite familiar with wiring ballasts, endcaps and bulbs. There is a kit with a Power Compact ballast prewired for a socket and a 55w bulb for $40, but you'd have to build your own canopy and provide your own reflector. Or you could mount it into a rain gutter stamping if you werent' particular about how the light strip looked.
if you have a regular hood you can get a double flourescent light strip for $36 online. I found it to be just barely adaquate and ended up going to a 55 watt Retrofit anyway.
