Are snail populations self-limiting

First, Happy Father's Day to the dads out there. :bounce:

Now on to my question. I got some plants from thatfishplace.com and pond snails hitched a ride on my formerly snail-free tank. At first I tried to find all of them and remove them, but I gave up on that. I don't want to use chemicals because they will kill the shrimp, which my kids love. I figured I would get assassin snails or loaches at some point.

My daughter has really started to enjoy the snails. I stopped crushing them/removing them as an experiment. My fear is that the population would explode. With no preditors, I figured that eventually their numbers would reach an intolerable level, but that doesn't seem to have happened. It seems pretty steady.

Do snails "know when to stop" reproducing? If so, that males me feel much better.
