I wanna see a stop motion documentation of duckweed proliferation. I swear the stuff just appears out of thin air. I like it, but it does grow quite quickly.
All snails love duckweed and it sucks up nitrates as well. But the disadvantage is it grows rapidly and blocks the light so my hairgrass doesn't get any :/ As soon as I get rid of it all I turn around 5 seconds latter and the damn tank is full of it!
My female betta eats it sometimes. She's a maniac. Its easy enough to take out with a net. A mild nuisance. I dig the way the roots look from under the surface. Adds to the natural biotope feel and makes for cool pics.
I got a little in with some of the plants I bought (probably the frogbit, but not certain).
Didn't really become noticeable until about 2 months in, and then it was ridiculous.
I've found that using a container to skim off the surface (trying to remove surface biofilm) worked really well. I'm sure I've got a couple tiny ones hanging out waiting to multiply, but it was easy enough for me to remove most of the noticeable stuff.

Throw in some silver dollars They'll eat them up in no time. But yeah, duckweed is annoying.. especially when they are accidentally introduced in shrimp tanks and you have some shrimp hanging on the duckweed beneath and you are trying to get rid of it so your plants can get some light.. and then you may accidentally net shrimplets.. Ughh. I managed to net them all out eventually though to feed my silver dollar fish.
Tamra, I watched the video, and duckweed growth is STILL a black box to me. Thanks for the link, it seems like an excellent idea that's really worth our time to explore!
I got two hitch hikers on some other plants on Saturday night and now next day, I can see at least 12 pieces in my son's tank.
But I'm not complaining because I like it, well at least for now I do!
