The death of Mr. Appleton, our beloved apple snail

Our first pet and our name sake, Mr. Appleton, died tonight in a bed of Downoi. We brought him home from a LFS almost exactly a year ago today when we started the aquarium hobby, when he was a young yellow Apple Snail about the size of a quarter. He soon settled into our 7.9G Fluval and became the most entertaining critter amidst an active RCS colony and a small school of fish, gnawing on the driftwood and our short-lived wisteria, and when bored, riding up the air bubble curtain and gliding back down. A voracious scavenger, he kept our tank clean and grew visibly each time he feasted on a dead fish or shrimp (we lost a few early on). He was also a good sport and would think nothing of giving a lift to smaller nerite snails and numerous shrimps around the tank.

Mr. Appleton grew steadily until a few months ago, reaching a size somewhere between a golf ball and a billiard ball. The marimo ball that he used to have to climb over, he now just pushed the tank at will.

Mr. Appleton, you will be missed and fondly remembered
