At this point, you can get an AquaClear 20 for $16.49 at Foster & Smith - just a dollar or two more than a Red Sea. My advice would be to go that route. You can slow flow down with a sponge pre-filter and you'll end up with a better piece of equipment.

Would I sponge just the intake? Are you sure thats not too much for such a small shrimp tank?

You can use a prefilter and if that is still too much flow you can cut a sponge and put it over the outlet to slow it down oven more.
