Hello All, My name is John, and I'm kind of curious as to where most of the members here, in the Michigan subsection are. As well as what we're doing.

I'll start us all off.

I live in Birch Run, at the southern end of the tri-city area.

I currently have 3 tanks running, Oscar in a 55G, problem JD in a 15G, and a peaceful community tank of guppies and ghost shrimp in a 29G

I work at a place called the Goalpost here, we do pizza.

I'd love to hear where all of you are from, and what you've been up to.

I love them. This was one of the fish I was fish I was trying to get for awhile ended up going to a LFS that was like 45-1 hour from me and they were all out. Then late last year I found some at a auction and then yesterday I just picked up 8 more. Right now I have a male that is really mean. I just hope I can get them to breed. It's nice to see them when they color up more they are beautiful fish.

We stopped at Preuss' on Sunday and I'm glad we did! Pretty neat place. It was crazy busy and all the staff were still very friendly. I had to wait my turn for for someone in freshwater to become available, but the guy that helped me was very helpful and patient as I asked him question after question. It was great to see some of the fish I'd been reading about up-close and in person.

They normally have a great selection of plants. They of a few plant geeks there. Did you see the rainbowfish tank? I love that display and the angelfish tank. If you talk to Rick Pruess you can get about any plant you want on order but standard stock is pretty robust. Don't expect white anubias but anything you could expect someone to carry they have.

Did they have any freshwater shrimp in? That is one place they lack.

It is pretty crazy there on the weekends but weekdays are more reasonable.

I love looking at the poision dart frogs. They have tadpoles-adult frogs for you to see.

Yes, I really enjoyed the rainbowfish tank and the angelfish tank. I didn't realize some rainbows could get so big! We did see the tadpoles and they had some freshwater shrimp nanos, but they were all pretty vacant. I saw a few bamboo shrimp, one cherry, two tiny orange shrimp, and something prettier labelled as a zebra shrimp.

Zebra shrimp

Could the Zebra have been a form of CBS?

I've heard them called that before due to the monochromatic coloration of CBS.

Is anyone on the Forum from the Saginaw/Genesee county area?

I'm trying to forge together a local hobby group, between this site and one other.

Which you should all Join, PM me for the link.

Some of you, such as yukon are already there.

Hi,

My name is jared, and i live just south of lansing. it is funny, lullafishi mentioned being there on sunday, and i was as well! i'm in the process of cycling an 8 gallon nano tank for a dwarf puffer and possibly some fish.

an aside on rick preuss and walkthrough - several years ago when we decided to get our first fish tank, we spent probably 2 hours with rick and one of his fresh water planted specialists (unfortunately seems to have moved on, now) talking about salt vs fresh, then when we decided on fresh how to cycle the tank, what size, budget, etc.

we ended up with a 36 gallon bowfront anf a fluval 205 canister filter, plus a bunch of goodies and plants. the advice they gave us was spot on. 6 months into the tank, every spec measured just right, for months. eventually, i stopped taking samples except once a week, and then once every couple weeks. now, just to make sure i take measurements every couple weeks, and that tank is dead solid. no algae blooms, never strays. food every few days, ferts once a week or so, vac the gravel when it starts looking manky and stir it up once a month or so.

i am not a great and experienced fish keeper, they just gave us great advice and set us up with equipment that exceeded the needs of the tank to make sure that we had a better than average chance of succeeding.

Brian, You're welcome friend.

Jenna, Welcome that's quite an impressive list there.

Thinking of Scaping and playing with the current sand container, my 20 long tank.
Considering a dirted tank, with thin gravel/sand cap.
Plants Galore.

Actively posting

Don't let the thread die now folks, it's just getting a good start going!

New developments anyone?

New purchases?

Personally I just redid the lighting on my guppy tank.
And dividing some hornwort to give to a friend, for his African Cichlid tank.

It'd actually be both an upgrade and downgrade. the reason being is I actually wish I had a longer tank to play with and scape more. not just for that, but more room for schooling fish. since the current setup I have now is only 30 inches long, the other being 36 inches, and not as tall so easier to reach.

I'm considering have two tanks, yes, just the 38 gallon being my primary focus. :)

Cool

Nice to see someone else being considerate of their fishes' space requirements.

What do you have in the 30" that would do better in the 36"?

I only ask, because volume wise, it makes a difference, but as for swimming space, it's really not that much more.

Don't take this as me being negative, or telling you what to do.

Personally I'd review the fish, and tank requirements and then I'd just watch them swim in the tank. If they seem cramped, upgrade away!

Just beware, eventually MTS will get you, and you'll be upgrading to a 250 gallon in the wall.

Jealousy

Wishing I had more time, and more energy, (not to mention money and space) for this hobby.

Currently waiting for my second 55 gallon, my spare 20L and the walstad bowl and wishing I had the aforementioned wishes fulfilled haha.

Anyone else have any projects running? Any new developments, purchases, ideas?
