A toothbrush to twirl at loose strands + a nice mat of elodea or h. difformis will help. Just wait it out really. One of the principles of ecology is the progression of species.
Why not get something like duckweed? It's usually a dollar a scoop at pond stores and garden centers... and a scoop covers alot of area... It's always does a fantastic job in my tanks at fending off algae...
Agreed with above, i bought silvenia nantans both to help block out some of my extra light and to attract the hair algae away from DHG, it has worked great!
