They were friendly enough, but the place was dirty and messy and their tanks had quite a few floaters. They kept bettas in tiny vases/jars and that turned me off from them as well.
Also, I question the knowledge of their staff when one of the employees is telling me it is okay to keep 20+ neons in my 5 gallon tank.
According to Mark at Aquatek, they're closed down in preparation for a move to a new location. However, he also added that they've been 'moving' since about February...so yes, they may be gone.
They're a good place, and generally their staff was very knowledgeable, although they usually had more cichlid/large fish people than those who were into inverts or plants...but they were generally willing to try to help. I hope Caroline and her crew find a reincarnation at a new spot.
I've driven by the new location. It's right on the highway and you can see the Amazonia sign while driving on I-35 a little bit North of Airport Blvd. However, there is a big for lease sign on the building, so I don't know if the deal fell through?
I've been to the new location twice since they reopened. The place is nicer, but the fish selection seems pretty weak if your not looking for chichlids and their plan section went from bad to worse.
Same here. I went recently to the new location and they had an entire setup just for plants, but there was hardly anything in it. They used to be a great source for plants but not anymore.
They're buiding up again, they don't have any of the fancy plants aquatek has but they're trying to get there. hopefully they get a wider variety since l practically live down the street from them.
I was by there yesterday and I have to say that I was not that impressed with their discus selection. They had a few misshapen blues and 2 heckles that were in separate tanks. The poor heckles were stressed and looked in really bad shape but I just could not bring myself to pay $224 for both of them and when I brought it up to the owner she kinda blew me off saying that she trusted her breeder in south Florida. I was really shocked with the breeder she is using because I have only had nothing but problems with this breeder. I purchased $1500 in discus from this same breeder and they were all DOA and I have never received a refund and will prob have to sue the breeder to get my money back.
If I buy anything local I go to AquaTek because they are really nice and are not pushy.
Please dont get me wrong I used to love Amazonia and I will buy somethings from them but not much.
The first time I checked them out they had a gorgeous teil angel that I was going to go back for once my tank was cycled, I went back and his tail had been eaten off They have nice tetras, their plants are stinky and covered in algae and goop. The store smells baaaaad. They are nice people but bleccch! I love the dome and aquatek now that I got there while they were open. The dome is small but have the best freshwater selection I've seen and the brightest tetras I have ever seen!
