What do advise I use for food for dwarf shrimp like RCS? Right now I just have hikari algae wafers and dried seaweed. I know about blanched vegetables but what else? What about hikari shrimp cuisine or HBH crab bites? Which is better? Also how about shirakura? How long would one of those bags last and is it worth the money? If so, should I buy just the 30g bag or the 90g bag? Last but not least, how about feeding red astax crumb food? I've seen various people selling it on ebay and such and was wondering if it is necessary. I also am using a sponge filter and have lots of moss and manzanita in the tank so there should be plenty of microorganisms. Eventually I am going to switch the tank over to a CRS tank but I want treat all the shrimp the same and give them the best.
On a side note, are mineral stones helpful or should one just stay away from them as they aren't that important?
Mineral rocks aren't too important. I, personally, have some in my tank. It doesn't do much, and I bought it cause it was 1) Cheap ($15 for 7lbs in total with shipping) and 2) I planned on breaking the sucker up to make a canyon in my tank.
As for food, the hikari algae wafers and shrimp cuisine seem to be a staple for a lot of shrimp tank owners. I use KENS PREMIUM VEGETABLE STICKS WITH CALCIUM and KENS PREMIUM SPIRULINA WAFERS. (sorry for caps, I just copied and pasted from the site)
Have you thought about the Mosura line of shrimp food products?
I never personally used it, but that's also another brand name food product for dwarf shrimps I'm just throwing out there that wasn't included on your list.
Hikari has a free sample promotion going on, and their shrimp cuisine is one of the available samples. If you haven't already taken advantage of that offer you could always try before you buy.
Shirakura is wonderful. But currently it costs more than some are willing to pay since Gabe isn't selling at this time. Literally the shrimp will come running to it. A bag should last you a year or more, but it depends on how much you give to friends to try out and how many shrimp you feed. I'm on my second bag and I have several shrimp tanks with varying successes in breeding. First bag lasted around a year.
HBH Crab bites are also a dining bell for my shrimp. Hikari Algae wafers are well taken, but they last more than a day so I use bits not whole wafers.
Variety is good. I also happily use Ken's foods, but an acquaintance swears they kill his fish. I'll continue to feed it.
HBH Crab Cuisine is the business. No need to bother with expensive japanese-imported stuff when HBH is readily available shrimp crack, especially if you just have RCS. It's not like they are delicate or anything.
My shrimp as of late enjoy Hikari algae wafers, Hikari catfish wafers, and flake food and sinking pellets. (many of these are for other tank mates but the shrimp do in fact eat alot of them.)
Your pal,
I have about 6-7 Crystal Red Shrimp for about 3 weeks now. And I dont feed them
anything. I guess they are doing fine with fish food leftovers and algae, and they are
growing and doing vey well in my NPT 20G.

I have a rack that currently house RCS, Yellows, Blue Pearls, Snowballs, and Sulawesi Yellow Cheeks, and I feed them Shirakura and Shirakura Special on alternating days. They seem to love that stuff. I bought a 90g bag from Gabe like a year back, and Im still working on the same bag.
I mix things up by tossing in veggies every now and then, and I always make sure I have India Almond leaves inside the tank, so that the shrimps and baby shrimps have something to snack on during the weekend as I don't feed during the weekends.
I've never used Mosura products so I dont have any input, but I know my shrimps go crazy for Shirakura and Shirakura Special.
As far as mineral rocks, I'm guessing you are talking about is Montmorillonite. I have one inside my 20L right now, that Im getting ready for some Hinos. I've heard it's suppose to help enchance the white for CRS but once I confirm it for myself I will let you know.
After getting a shipment of CRS from DK here her acclimation email mentioned feeding dandelions... obviously you need to be 100% sure they are pesticide free, boiled for 12 minutes, cooled and the shrimps come a runnin'
Its funny to see a snowball with a yellow poop line.
Otherwise the standard fare HBH, Shirakura, a wafer now and then.
Dude thats a really cool thing, I didnt know that they can eat dandelions. Where do you get yours from? Im sure its not from the wild... for that matter, are there dandelion seeds???? LOL I wanna grow some now...
The dandelion makes those shrimp look like terrestrial creatures. Cool picture!
As for shrimp food I mix a whole bunch of different things and roll them into little balls The shrimp seem to like it.
Anyone here try the Shirakura Ebi Dama Special? I just bought a large bag off of ebay, and was wondering if it is good. I have tried the regular Ebi Dama, since a friend gave me some and the shrimp went NUTS. So I went on ebay to buy some, and found only one listing for the "Special" kind. Just wondering what people's experience with it is.

I'm feeding the hikari stuff, crab bites, shrimp cuisine, algea wafers, cory wafers (whatever it's called), kens sticks with calcium, shirakura regular and special. I usually just pick whatever catches my eye first, and feed it to them. something different each day. But since I'm cheap, I usually feed them the crab bites more often then the rest, since it's one of the cheapest of them
I'm not sure why so many ove to add MSG, DIY or go with the Spirulina sticks from Aquatic eco, they swarm over those in seconds.
Cheap too.
No MSG, never understood why they add that to fish food.
Deshelled peas are also excellent.

Tom Barr
