Java/Xmas Moss question
Can tannin from driftwood make my moss turn brown? My moss isn't dying because it has new growth but it has a brownish tent to it.

Could it be getting burned by sunlight?

How many hours of light do you give the tank? How strong is the light?

I have a zoo med ultra sun compact fluorescent bulb. Its 6500K and 10 watts. I'd say the light stays on in between 10 and 12 hours.

10 watts on how many gallons? (you might want to supply more detail. )
It does look to me like it is getting too much light. I am not really sure what else it could be. Are you adding anything to the water? Does the driftwood smell? |

10 watts for a 5 gallon tank. The only thing I add to the tank is nutrafin plant grow. Sunlight also comes through the window all day long. My driftwood doesn't smell but it is leaching tannin and has some type of fungus growing on it.

This is what I would do. Put the green parts of the moss in a jar and put the jar in a part of the room that doesn’t get any sunlight. The brown parts are probably dead so you can throw them away. The room should have enough light to grow the moss. It doesn’t take much. Tannins are not really a problem. The fungus will probably go away. You could just boil the wood.
What else is in there? |

Those sound like good choices. Just remember that a 5 gal tank is practically no water at all. The plants will get lots of ambient light. I hope the moss grows back well for you. I have always found it grows faster if you keep it pulled apart a bit rather than bunched up. I always have some growing in the plastic trays one gets from the supermarket with the clear covers. Those work great.
