I have a pair of cockatoo cichlid in my 26g tank. I also have one male checkerboard cichlid in there as well among other fishes. Im thinking of getting a female checkerboard cichlid to pair up with the male in there. Is that a good idea? Will the cockatoo and the checkerboard pairs get along? or will they not be compatible together?
Well, you could be lucky, but in general you should not put checkerboard cichlids together with apistogramma species in a 26 g tank.
The checkerboard will not survive the constant aggression of the Apistogramma
