look for any plants growing underwater or at the edge of the water, and just replant them into or around your pond. the lake and your pond probably have pretty similar conditions, so if you find something that looks cool or interesting, grab it!
as for the "dip" i am pretty sure that you just fill up two buckets with water, add some bleach to one, and then dip it in the bleach to kill the algae, then dip it in the clean water to rinse it off, and put it in the water.
Magnesium (Mg) and Iodine (I) are trace elements that one might need to add in a high tech tank, but even then it isn't really necessary per se. You shouldn't ever need to worry about them. (although if you ever happen to acquire a strip of Mg, burn it! it burns extremely brightly and looks really cool.)
Hey, I don't know about the dip... but here is a list of native Florida aquatic plants for water gardening. But for my tank I dip plants in a 19:1 water to bleach ratio for 30 sec, and then soak it in de-chlorinated water.
I believe you are thinking of potassium permanganate. KMnO4, frequently sold by the water softener department in hardware stores. I have never used it but theres info out there on the concentrations and such.
I've used PP. It works well. Here's the concentrations.
100ppm = 1 gram in 10 liters of water - will kill all parasites on plants. At 100 ppm Potassium Permanganate bath will kill any thing but plants (no more than 15 minutes)
Better check into regulations about taking plants, in my area you can't legally take plants from established lakes or ponds, and there's some pretty hefty fines attached (like $50k!)
Thanks for the info. and I'll check into the regs. $50K fine Whoosh...
