1 Gallon Bowl

I am making my porch into a place were I can go to read in the evenings and wanted to add a 1 gallon bowl for a few small aquatic plants. I was wondering if I could put shrimp in it? I am in southern California so the weather is pretty nice.

I'm thinking with sunlight you'll be battling algae.

Depending on how long it's in direct sunlight.

I would fill the bowl up with water. Put the plants I desire in it, then put it in its new location with a thermometer and recored the temp changes over a 24h timespan. From there I would decide if it needs more shade, more air flow ext. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Define "pretty nice." It's not going to get too cold for most of the shrimp species that are commonly kept, as long as the bowl doesn't freeze solid, but a hot afternoon could very well kill your shrimp.

The porch has a roof and there are two large trees behind it so the bowl will not get any direct sunlight.

If you have Mosquitos in your area make sure you watch for those wigglers. They'll kill your shrimp too.

Hoppy told me it would be a bad idea to do it in mu old thread "Is ambient light enough?" I thought of using a vase indoors, but the principle is the same.

Quote:
I don't think this will work at all. You wouldn't have enough light for healthy plant growth, no nutrients to support the growth, and the shape of a vase almost guarantees no dissolved oxygen in the water. Then, because of the small volume of water, the water temperature would change quickly as the room temperature changes. I suspect you would quickly have a dark green vase, from algae, and one with a very bad smell.
The temp would change all day and all night. I definitely wouldn't put shrimp in it. If you did it, you'd *have* to have a top or else it will become a great mosquito breeding ground. I don't think there are mosquito fish small enough for a 1g bowl, but I might be wrong. Those fish are designed to be outside, so it wouldn't be a big deal to have one.

I'd stick to shade-loving terrestrial plants.
