Quick Comparison -- Orange Zebra Otos vs Normal Otos

Well, a few weeks back I had 5 Orange Zebras. Very cool little guys. 2 handfuls of Amaznoia New to fill in some low spots and 24 hours later, I had 1 Orange Zebra Oto. The rest had succumbed to a mini cycle induced by the Amazonia. Lessons learned.

I added 5 normal otos today. The normal otos are completely different, at least for me, in terms of behavior. They try to school with my rasboras, actively swim in the current, are being very diligent in cleaning irregular surfaces and plants. What's most striking is the swimming. They love the current. My zebra otos behaved more like bristlenoses that I had in previous tanks. Fun guys, but they like to stick to glass/rocks and don't really "play."

I would like to get some more zebras at some point, but this difference in behavior just struck me immediately.

the behavioral difference might be due to the low number of one species versus the other

Perhaps. I am comparing when I had full numbers of both.

how long did you have them though? I wouldn't say anything about behavior until they have been adjusted to the tank at least for a few weeks or so

Excellent point. The full school of zebras only lasted a couple of weeks. I am mainly making an "out of the bag" assessment.
