Hi, i guess i could replace the word "unique" with "troublesome" in the subject line, so I am looking for a bit of help. I'm considering purchasing a 50 gallon aquarium 30x20x20, and as such, i'm wondering how I would go about getting the right lighting for it. As far as the power compact 30 inch systems i've seen on the web, i'd be getting 130 watts (2x65watt) maximum. While that will do if it must, i was wondering if anyone could suggest any alternatives. What about a custom made canopy for a 24 inch metal halide fixture? Anyway, i'm open to most suggestions with the exception of "buy a standard 36 inch 55 gallon" as I simply can't fit it.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the help so far.
So would I be pretty safe with perhaps a 2x 65 watt strip and a single 65 watt strip? Or does that lack the "intensity" described in the lighting FAQ? I'd like to grow some water hedge and some other high light species, so i'm not sure if 2 70 watt fixtures is going to be enough, unless MH wattage is calculated differently. I haven't come across any of those 70 watt fixtures while browsing online either, any recommendations?
with that depth you need to worry about penetration of light. plants taht need high light to stay low.. might not stay that low. I would leave you options open till more people who have high light set ups and deep tanks respond. I would go with VHO or PC lights... MH are HOT lights.. and waste a lot of energy. They are good for marine tanks.. but for a small tank like yours it is more cost effective to go with other options. Possibly.
