Thanks for allowing me to use your forum!

I planted my very first tank this past Friday. Everything's been going reasonably well...just a couple plants melting, almost all others are showing growth and changing colors, so we'll see what happens. I do have one question, though. There's been an oily residue on the surface the last couple days, so last night I did a water change and cleaned out the canister filter really well, but today I noticed it is still there. Not sure if I am doing something wrong (and my tank is in imminent danger), if this is a normal part of the process, or what? Anything I should do? Thanks much!

Welcome! things builds up on the surface due to lack of surface agitation and is an easy fix. so just keep the surface moving (does not need to be too much) to prevent silt from building up

Thank you! I'll fix it. I was a little worried about losing CO2 that way (I currently have a diffuser in the tank) but I'm currently looking at putting a reactor together instead, to hopefully make things more efficient.
