My 30 Gallon Aquarium

I have a 30 gallon aquarium, I wouldnt really call it planted, but I am looking for any thoughts on how I can make it better with out making it high tech and very time consuming.

I have a standard 30 gallon aquarium. I have the standard hood and light fixture on it that came with the aquarium. I am using an aqua-tech 20-40 HOB filter.

I have a fine sand substrate, some rocks, and some small driftwood branches. As for plants, I only have three amazon swords. I tried to grow some dwarf hair grass, but with out much luck. It stayed alive but never grew or spread in here, I have had luck in a ten gallon and a small container. I know someone is going to frown on this, but this past summer I collected some native aquatic plants from a nearby lake. They did pretty good for a couple of months but recently my pleco ate some of them.

As for my current fish:
7 peppered corys
6 neon tetras
4 pristilla tetras
1 pitbull pleco
1 sepia tetra
Many many snails

I would like to be able to grow some more plants in the future. I am also thinking about just redoing the whole aquarium. Any ideas on better lighting or filtration are gladly accepted.

You could get some anubias, water sprite & water wisteria, those grow fairly well in low light just slow & won't require much at all, if the light is low then it would just grow slow
