Hi all,
Firstly hello to everyone as this is my first post! Im looking for some guidence from everyone on an RO water filter system I can use in my house. I currently own a small 60g tank and am upgrading to a much larger tank in a few weeks.
Im based in the UK and currently pop to my local pet shop to pick up a 5g drum of ro water and use this to do water changes, this however will not be any good for my next tank because of the size.
So can people link me to the kind of systems I should be looking at for my tropical set-up?
Can I have a system that will just fill up my current water container and switch off when that is full??
Thanks for the replys guys! So it sounds like I can pick up a filter unit, hook it up to the water supply and then get some kind of switch off valve to leave in my container and job done?
When I go to the pet shop they always ask If I want minerals in the water? Is this a stich up or should I be buying something to add to every other water change too???
Many species are also easily adaptable to a wide range of water characteristics as well, especially when tank bred/raised. From my limited understanding about Discus, they used to be incredibly difficult to keep and most certainly required RO a while ago, but since tank bred varieties are becoming more common, that simply isn't the norm anymore. I'm not trying to convince you to not use RO, I was simply curious as to your reason because some people think they need RO for no apparent reason. But if your fish will thrive better in RO (which likely they will) then it's good that you're recreating their natural environment as best you can.
Have you decided on a unit yet? Some come with the float valve and others require you to purchase it separately. Also, in order to use a float valve, you'll want to make sure that the unit comes with an automatic shut-off valve already plumbed in.
Thanks for the great advice so far guys! Now I know what to look for I will be browsing tonight for something suitable. The tank I'm purchasing is about 400l so I'm assuming a unit that produces around 40lpd will be fine?
I think you would want something at does at least 200L per day. at 40L/day it will take you 10 days to fill the tank.
I notice you are in London, otherwise I would recommend a BulkReefSupply RO Unit.
Faster is not necessarily better. Faster requires the water pressure to be higher, which also decreases the quality of the post-RO water which will use up the DI cartridge quicker. A 75GPD Filmtec RO Membrane is an ideal compromise between output flow and quality.
Also thought I would make this a little more interesting for everyone and add a couple of pictures of my current tank. It was an experiement to see if I enjoyed the hobby and as a result I have found it to be a great learning tool.
Sorry for the bad quality!
