Return of... (a short story)

When my shipment of Glossostigma elatinoides came, I was so excited to start my new emersed setup, but I had no idea what was in store for me. I quickly opened up the package, carefully removed the green plant from the rough fiber mat, and started ripping my new glosso up into clumps for planting. After finishing the planting process, I noticed that I had one clump left, so I decided to transfer it into my OEBT tank. As I was lowering the flora into the water of my aquarium, realization came to me that I was making a huge mistake, but it was already too late. I quickly pulled out the clump of glosso from the tank, but there were already leftover strands floating at the surface. What have I done!? I kept reassuring myself that it couldn't be that bad, and maybe they wouldn't come after all. But, to my horror, I saw it a few minutes later. The terrible swirly shell, the menacing antannae, and, worst of all, that horrid, slimy, icky body. Yes, my worst fear has returned- the SNAIL. Now I am furiously pulling out the leftover strands of glosso from the infected tank, attempting to remove any other contaminants, but I already know that I cannot stop the inevitable. I know that the gruesome creatures will occupy the infected tank for as long as I have it, and so begins my depression and suffering.

Alum is your friend. I'd grab whatever glosso you have and let it sit in an alum dip for several hours to several days. It kills the snails AND the eggs. But I had some plants come in that went through two alum baths and a PP dip and STILL, STIIIILLLLL I had a bladder snail and nematodes survive...but just the ONE snail which quickly got evacuated when I found him a couple of days later. So it's not a 100% cureall but about the best I've found. The alum does a better job on the snails than PP ever has for me. I didn't mind the pest snails in my last tank....at first. But good gravy could they lay eggs. When I tore it down I had about 20 babies in there I didn't even know were in there. Yeah that's not a lot I know, and I tore the tank down to prevent it from becoming a nightmare. Love the illustration to show your feelings...quite appropriate. LOL!

As you see em on the glass just crush em with your thumb. Their smashed bodies will fall to the substrate and be devoured by the shrimp.

My yellows are ruthless. The flip over small pond snails and eat them alive. They don't bother ramshorns or larger snails though.

How do I train mine to become this ruthless? Should I withhold love?

Are pond snails and bladder snails the same thing? I think that's what I have. Well, off to evilbay!

Well I could feed them to my fish if I wanted to go through that effort I thought you were talking about shrimp killing LIVE snails. Not squished. LOL!

Well if bladders are smaller than ponds I guess the yellows will eat them too?

Wasn't sure if you were going to Evilbay to order shrimp or Alum but if it's alum, it's in the grocery store in the spice aisle. It's for pickling. Just wanted to make sure I put that in there, would hate to have you waiting on alum! Shrimp, well, that's different!

Shame on you for not dipping your plants. You know better, young man. Now go to your room and think about what you've done.
