Ok, just stop everything you're doing and leave all the tanks alone as they are right now before you mess them all up. You're doing too many things to too many tanks and you'll have no idea what the problem is if something goes wrong, which I fear it will.

I had to re-read this whole thread twice to make sure I had everything straight. Phew!

Why are you messing with RO and moving water from one tank to another? The beneficial bacteria is NOT in the water.

Tetra SafeStart is intended to be used in a tank with fish in it so there is a constant food source for the beneficial bacteria in the TSS. You will need to move fish into the 20L for the TSS to work properly. Follow the instructions on the bottle EXACTLY. Leave the fish in the tank for 2-3 months to keep the cycle alive while the biofilm develops. Once the tank is mature, remove the fish and properly acclimate the shrimp to their new home.

Onto your question, how I jump start my tanks. Running two filters on every tank means I can take the cycled media from an old filter and put it into the new filter without hurting my cycle. For instance, let's say I'm starting a 20L with the same types of filters I've got on my 20H, which are an AC 30 and an AC 50. I can take the biomedia from the old 30 and put it in the new 30. I can take the sponge from the old 50 and put it in the new 50. I can take some, but not all, of the extra filter floss I have and put some in each of the new filters. Now I have two basically cycled filters on my new 20L. I'd do the ammonia thing for a few days or a week, however long it took to get the ammonia and nitrites to 0 in 12 hours and voila! New tank! Or I could just take a whole filter from a cycled tank and put it on a new tank and watch both tanks carefully for ammonia and nitrite spikes for a week or two. Did that make sense? Everyone has their own way, but this is mine.

Okay, here I go....first I didn't know that there is no bacteria in the water. So I did figure aged water would be beneficial. I do a small water change almost daily. At one point I did do a major water change and lost a couple of shrimp so I started this method. My water is well water. EXTREMELY hard. I used half RO and half well to soften it up a bit to make up for evaporation. I don't do this all the time. As far as jump starting a tank, I'm not exactly sure I did anything different than what you do. Except checking the water parameters. I used the WC's for that. The AC 20 was fully cycled. The corner filter was new. Substrate was half new, half used. Used decorations with bio film on them. I also feed them to supplement their food supply. What I am trying to do is jump start the 20L to get the FR's out of the Edge 6 and get that going for my son to take to college with him. I need to get all the breeding shrimp out of there so they can breed in their new home. As it is I'll have to wait a couple of weeks for the babies to get big enough to move. I have a love/hate relationship with the Edge tank. I love the look but hate trying to get things out of there!!!! Please tell me your thouights on Purigen. Thanks!!!

If you're going to use RO, you'll have to use it all the time, not just sometimes. You'll need the exact same proportions of tap to RO each WC and top off with RO. What are your tap params? GH, KH and pH? Your son is going to have to slowly acclimate the shrimp to the water at college, so make sure he knows that.

As for Purigen, I've personally never used it but serious shrimpers here swear by it. I'd search the site for posts about it.

GH-180, KH-240, PH-7. PH has been 7 before. He doesn't want shrimp. That's why I'm trying to get them out. He wants Kuhli Loaches.

From what I've read those get up to 4 inches and you should have at least 3. Not right for an EDGE in my opinion.

Are you using test strips or liquid test for GH and KH? If you're using liquid, go by the number of drops to get your degrees of general and carbonate hardness. We all talk degrees here.

Now I'm confused. Is your son taking the 6g or the 20L?

Tank update!!! Sorry for the delay in responding. FR's are doing fine. I am currently moving them back into the 20L. My son is taking the Edge to college with him. I knew the Khuli's were to much for the Edge. I made him read this post and those are now a thing of the past.
