I would check with the salt water group, they seem to have some systems like that, overall don't imagine it to be to hard, could use like a toilet bowl float attached to a Solonoid on a water line kind of thing lol

Are you interested in a slow drip type change or a setup with a reserve tank which operates on a timer? At one point I had six tanks set up to change out water without me but at that point I did not need to treat the water in any way as it only had chlorine. Letting the water set let the chlorine gas off without need of treatment.

For controls, I found the mercury type switch on old washing machines were really reliable and cheap to find. Due to the mercury pollution questions they are likely much harder to find unless you get into really old machines.

My biggest problem was getting the water drained from each tank being equal. Can you get water supply and drain to the tank area?

First, Welcome to TPT!
second, do a search on the forum and there are a few versions of DIY water changers.

Mine is one of the simpler ones, with just 1 relay valve...

I'm planning on setting up something like this on my 175 gallon (once I get another house to put it in) I was thinking of using an automatic sprinkler system setup, connected to my DIY canister filters (a couple house filters and a pump) It's going to be a while until I even start on this project, but I would start with an automatic sprinkler system. You have timer-operated valves for letting water out, then in. A powerhead in a five gallon bucket filled with a diluted mixture of water conditioner and water set up on a timer to turn on for a specified amount of time between when the tank empties, and when it is refilled will ensure your water gets treated. It won't be easy, but it won't be terribly difficult to figure out either.

Of course, with any DIY project... Cash is King.
