I currently have a 40 gallon on one of those iron stands just like the below picture. Was thinking of maybe eventually putting another 40 gallon on the bottom shelf. Is the bottom sturdy enough? Should I put some type of support made out of 2 by 4s?
It's been many moons since I've used one of those, but I don't think you'll be able to get two tanks of the exact same dimensions on that stand. The outer perimeter of the top "shelf" is made to the exact footprint of a quoted tank size. The angle-iron corners will make it impossible to get the same footprint underneath. It becomes easier to understand when you look at one in person. The stand is certainly sturdy enough, but you'll have to put a tank with a slightly shorter footprint underneath.
I 've put plywood on both the bottom & top surfaces. I cut it longer in the back to create a shelf. Great to hide food canisters, fert. bottles, air pumps what ever you want close but out of site. You can also mount power strips on the plywood.
I've got a few of the metal stands. Not all of them doubles though. On a double the front legs will not wrap the stand like the back legs. They face the opposite direction. The picture appears to be a single stand. You can't fit the same size tank below. You don't need anything between the metal and the tank.
On that stand pictured although you can't fit another 40 you can make a plywood shelf and put a smaller tank on that.
Nobody has suggested it yet but set you stand outside and prime and paint it with Rustoleum paint. It'll only cost a couple bucks to paint it and it'll save you some corrosion headache later.
