Mystery Black Bar Endler appears

OK, somehow, a black bar endler appeared in my tank. The only fish I had in there breeding are supposed to be pure Japan Blue Guppies. It can't be possible that I got a black bar from impure Japan blues, can it? They are different species for crying out loud. Is it possible a tiny fry ended up in a baggy with a recent fish purchase (I got some ottos)? I am baffled.

I will try for a photo, but he is quite small and my camera likely not up to the task. Now that I think of it, I also moved those ottos from one tank to another, so it is less likely that the endler made both trips.

How long have you had the guppies and do you know anything about their breeders stock? What lines were crossed and how many generations ago?

Endlers and guppies are getting too crossbred...

I've heard of and had disappearing fish, but never appearing ones!

I just emailed the supplier I got the Japan blues from (I thought I had erased all info!). Hopefully he will help to solve the mystery. And yes, endlers and guppies are interbreeding too often--I wish people would be more careful. I tried to get a pure line of Japan blues and will be a little disappointed if I didn't. But it is still interesting!

My guppies have been in that tank since they arrived May 24.

Were the females virgins when you got them? Most likely not, but its an idea...you don't know if the guy accidentally got a few Endler's males into his Japan Blue stock and they mated with one of your females or even if you received a young female Endler's by accident...all possibilities.

I cannot get a clear photo of the little guy, but he looks very much like this (the one in front) although he is not in full color yet.

Added any plants lately?

Possible that the little guy came in as a hitch hiker that way, too.

Nope, no new plants.

This is what the guy I bought them from says:
"Hi... Very interesting. I really do not know how or why this could have happened. I did have some black bar Endlers but they were kept outside in my greenhouse & never were in my fish room. Unless the guy I got them from crossed them through Endlers at some time. I had the Japan Blues for a while & this never happened to any fry I had..."

Well, he's a cute little bugger anyway. Guess I'll just be happy about it.

I'm betting he somehow contaminated his tanks with Black Bars without realizing it.
