Very fine grain is not good. But if you're just using it in a bowl, then it doesn't matter. Just keep it out of a tank, especially if you use a canister filter.
BTW, did you know that the average candy bar has 8 insect legs in it? Think about that when you say what's in that bag is just silica sand.

The spider legs don't bother me, whether in the candy bar or the sand. What did finally do me in on using cheap sand was the way it varies. You just never know what is in the bag even if you buy the same bag from the same dealer. Play sand is just shipped in from anywhere they can find it. The last time I tried, it must have come from the Red River as I was never able to get it to come clean. At that point I had spent about twelve hours rinsing it and then had to throw it all out and start over.

Sooo much CaCO3 in the beach sand. Well, usually.
I've always thought it might be interesting to try some of that black volcanic sand from Hawaii....? |
