Hello. I've been lurking for a while and have learned a lot. I finally have a question that I can't find the answer for and would like some help.
One of my otos has white spots and I'm not sure what they are. It may be ich but I haven't introduced any new fish to the tank is several weeks. None of my other otos or fish are showing any abnormal spots. If you have any ideas what it is let me know.
Howdy jwwoodjr, I'll take a stab at this, and say that looks like a flexibacter columnaris symptom. I have not had to treat for this, but I do know that it is a gram-negative bacteria. So water changes for sure. And an anti-biotic may save your oto. I am sure that others here with more experience will be able to provide more info. Good luck and welcome to TPT.
minocycline (maracyn 2) is really weak against columnaris. this is a strong, rapidly spreading disease.
use kanamycin (seachem kanaplex) or if you cant get it sulfathiozole (API triple sulfa, or seachem sulfathizole). i have used both against columnaris, and both worked. salt can also help, as this bacteria doesnt like salt.
DO NOT RAISE THE TEMPS. this bacteria preffers high temps, like 78-86. and it will spread much faster. some people actually advocate lowering the temps for this reason, but i just leave it alone.
Thanks for the replies. I'll start treating once I get off work. As of last night none of my other fish were showing any symptoms and hopefully it will be the same when I get home.
