I have some plants coming that I know are in tanks with trumpet snails. What can I treat the plants with that will kill any eggs that might be on them, before I put them in my tanks?
I've only had one snail infestation before. Later, while treating for ich with aquarisol, the aquarisol cured the fish of ich and I also noticed that I didn't have a problem with snails anymore. Has anyone ever used aquarisol as a dip before introducing plants to an aquarium?
trumpet snails multiply by hatching their eggs inside the adults shell. Hard to get rid of if its a potted plant. In other cases, just visual inspection on the roots and wash it through tap water several runs and you'll be good to go as far as trumpet snails is concern.
Thanks for the info. Someone else told yesterday that they clone themselves! Wow. Nature does some really strange things! Hopefully a good inspection will do it and maybe a quick bleach dip.
Why are you so set on eliminating trumpet snails? They are not bad for the tank and frankly if you get over-run its a good sign you are overfeeding. Otherwise you will rarely see them (they mostly come out at night) and they will keep your substrate aerated and fresher.
I use potassium permanganate on ALL plants I get.
A 15-30 soak and it kills the snails and ALL the eggs.
Is also effective on killing algae and as a medication on external parasites on fish and in the tank.
It can be used in the tank with fish and plants at lower dosage .( check the web for dosage rates and precautions )
It is not to hard on most plants and is totally bio degradable.
I love the stuff .
I hate snails except for the ones I WANT to keep.
Gold/Ivory/Blue apple snails along with Blue and Red Rams Horn snails.
Hey rich815. I just don't want any snails. I had an outbreak once and I don't ever want another one. I'm snail free now and hope to stay that way. I breed a lot of pleco's and I feed them a lot to get them to grow fast. Snails can take over in a heart beat in a situation like mine.
PP isn't fail proof. I had a lot of snails get by that dip no matter what concentration I used. I still use it as a disinfectant and to get rid of snail eggs, but for adults, you are best to rinse, rinse, rinse.
